When it premiered in 1966 sports drama Grand Prix achieved instant critical acclaim. Directed by John Frankenheimer produced by Edward Lewis and written by Robert Allen Aurthur the film followed the fate of four fictional drivers played by James Garner Brian Bedford Yves Montand and Antonio Sabàto. By strapping cameras to real Formula 1 cars viewers were treated to a never-before-seen driver’s point of view as cars careered around race tracks at breakneck speeds. So convincing was the in-seat camera positioning that contemporary audience members reported moving their heads in sync with the meandering race-track movements they saw on screen.
